Set three years after the events of “Afterlife,” “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” follows the seasoned Ghostbusters as they team up with their new recruits to thwart a chilling threat to New York City. Their adversary? A sinister deity intent on assembling a spectral army that could spell doom for the world.

Development and Production

With the success of “Afterlife,” anticipation for a sequel was high among fans. Sony Pictures responded by announcing the sequel in April 2022, with Jason Reitman initially set to direct. However, Gil Kenan eventually took over as director in December of the same year, with Reitman remaining involved as a co-writer and co-producer. Principal photography began in March 2023 and concluded in June of the same year.

Music and Tribute

Renowned composer Dario Marianelli was tasked with scoring the film, succeeding “Afterlife” composer Rob Simonsen. “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” holds particular significance as the first film in the franchise released following the passing of co-creator Ivan Reitman, father of director Jason Reitman. Ivan Reitman receives posthumous credit as a producer alongside his son and Jason Blumenfeld. The film is dedicated to Ivan Reitman’s memory and coincides with the 40th anniversary of the original Ghostbusters film.

Release and Reception

The world premiere of “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” took place at the AMC 13 Theater at Lincoln Square in New York City on March 14, 2024. The film was subsequently released in the United States on March 22 by Sony Pictures Releasing under its Columbia Pictures label. While receiving mixed reviews from critics, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” has proven to be a commercial success, grossing over $177 million worldwide and earning its place as the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2024.
