Originally conceived as a standalone film, ‘Joker’ (2019) aimed to launch DC Black, a series distinct from the DC Extended Universe that focuses on darker, more experimental stories akin to DC Black Label comics.” Despite director Todd Phillips and lead actor Joaquin Phoenix’s interest in a potential sequel based on the success of the film, they initially proposed ‘Joker’ as a standalone production. Phoenix showed interest in revisiting the part, citing the character’s limitless potential, which was not a consideration prior to the film. He was paid $20 million for his participation.
In November 2019, initial reports suggested a ‘Joker’ sequel involving Phillips, Silver, and Phoenix, but contradictory statements emerged.” While Phillips agreed that there had been discussions regarding a possible sequel, he noted that it was not currently in development. He also confirmed that ‘The Batman’ (2022) would not follow the ‘Joker’ narrative. Phillips indicated interest in a Batman-focused spin-off set in the same Gotham, but he did not confirm his participation. Phillips confirmed the sequel’s development in June 2022, co-writing the script with Silver and revealing the title ‘Joker: Folie a Deux.
In the same month, it was revealed that Lady Gaga was in talks to play Harley Quinn in a musical rendition of the film. In the summer, Gaga announced her casting. Around August, speculations circulated that Zazie Beetz was negotiating to resume her role as Sophie Dumond, which she did the following month. Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Jacob Lofland were added to the cast. Gleeson admitted to feeling intimidated by his role after being lured in by Phoenix’s outstanding performance and Gaga’s presence. Following that, Harry Lawtey joined in October, getting a supposedly important part, according to Deadline Hollywood.
In February 2023, DC Studios CEO James Gunn revealed that ‘Folie a Deux’ would be a part of the DC Elseworlds, residing outside of the main cinematic universe.
Warner Bros Pictures has slated the theatrical release of ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ in the United States for October 4, 2024.
