Development and Production

Development for the first animated Garfield film intended for theatrical release began at Alcon Entertainment in May 2016. Mark Dindal was announced as the director in November 2018, with pre-production starting shortly thereafter in December. By 2021, Sony Pictures had secured global distribution rights, and Chris Pratt was cast as Garfield. The remaining cast members joined the project in 2022. Animation for the film was handled by DNEG Animation, and the score was composed by John Debney, a frequent collaborator of Dindal.

Release and Reception

The Garfield Movie was released in the United States on May 24, 2024, by Columbia Pictures through Sony Pictures Releasing. Similar to its live-action predecessors, the film received negative reviews from critics. Despite this, it has been a financial success, grossing over $195 million worldwide against a budget of $60 million, making it the tenth highest-grossing film of 2024.
